Matthew Hazell
Consultant Clinical Scientist
Matt holds extensive experience in clinical science, particularly in immunoassay development and immunohaematology. He earned his first PhD by developing immunoassays to detect adipokines, which he used to investigate disorders linked to obesity. His career with NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) spans over 15 years, during which he has contributed to multiple areas. He started at the International Blood Group Reference Laboratory, later working with the Protein Development and Production Unit, and subsequently advancing as a Post-Doctoral Research Scientist in the Antigen Engineering Team.
Recently, Matt completed the Higher Specialist Scientific Training (HSST) programme, earning a second Doctorate and attaining Fellowship in the Royal College of Pathologists. This specialist qualification allows him to practice in his current role as a Consultant Clinical Scientist in the Red Cell Immunohaematology Department at NHSBT, where he continues to bring his expertise to NHSBT’s essential clinical and scientific work.
