Nicci Wilkes

Consultant Clinical Scientist

Since joining NHSBT 26 years ago as a trainee BMS with Red Cell Immunohaematology (RCI) I have completed an MSc in Transfusion and Transplantation Science, the BBTS Specialist Certificate in Transfusion, and most recently become a Diplomate member of RCPath, following successful completion of my RCPath part 1 examination.
I continue my journey undertaking the Higher Specialist Scientific Training (HSST) programme to achieve Consultant Clinical Scientist status. HSST training has widened my transfusion knowledge and experience beyond red cells and explored clinical outcomes related to laboratory testing with transfusion and haematology. I participate in the clinical on-call rotas, supporting our clinicians, offering advice to laboratory and clinical members of the transfusion community, ensuring safe and effective treatment for patients with complex needs. I also chair the regional clinical MDT, reviewing highly complex cases referred to RCI, facilitating transfusion advice and communicating this to enhance patient care.
My interests stretch across transfusion, particularly within education and continuous improvement initiatives. This has led me to pursue and lead a research project looking at outcomes of data available for pregnancies in relation to HDFN, with aim to capture, analyse and utilise data driven change in care.
