Tom Bullock
Consultant Clinical Scientist
Dr. Tom Bullock is a Consultant Clinical Scientist specialising in Red Cell Immunohaematology, with more than two decades of experience at NHS Blood and Transplant. He provides national leadership in complex transfusion diagnostics and service development, drawing on extensive expertise built across senior roles within the International Blood Group Reference Laboratory and RCI services.
During his time as Interim Chief Scientific Officer for NHSBT, Tom played a key role in shaping national scientific strategy, with a particular focus on improving care for patients with complex transfusion requirements—including those living with Sickle Cell Disorder (SCD). He has been an advocate for addressing health inequalities in transfusion care, promoting equitable access to high-quality diagnostics and donor-recipient matching.
One of the first in the UK to complete the Higher Specialist Scientific Training (HSST) programme, Tom holds a Doctorate in Clinical Science (DClinSci) and FRCPath in clinical transfusion science. He is an active contributor to the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and the British Society for Haematology (BSH), supporting professional standards, education, and scientific advancement.
Tom also leads teaching on the MSc in Applied Transfusion and Transplantation Science at UWE and is a Fellow of both the IBMS and BBTS, reflecting his commitment to developing the scientific workforce and advancing transfusion practice.
