Work Package 3:
Donor/Patient Demand Modelling

There are four components to this work package:

To use population genetic databases to estimate the distribution of blood group antigens in NHSBT donors

To develop simple red cell antigen matching strategies that improve on current practice, by matching 2-3 additional blood groups.

To assess how the new matching strategies might improve treatment outcomes for different transfusion dependent patient cohorts

(e.g. patients with sickle cell, thalassemia, myelodysplasia)

To assess how the new matching strategies will affect the stock of blood, in particular the stock of emergency ‘universal’ blood (type Orr), and to model and assess any potential for negative consequences for patients who require transfusion but are not included in an extended matching scheme.
